Measuring Stability Storage

Stability storage is measured by evaluating how products change over time when exposed to controlled environmental conditions. The primary objective is to identify any physical, chemical, or microbiological changes that might affect the product’s quality, safety, and efficacy. This involves several key steps: 

Environmental Control: 

Stability storage environments are designed to replicate specific climate conditions based on the product’s intended market. These conditions are categorized into different climate zones as defined by the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH), such as temperate, subtropical, hot dry, hot humid, and hot/higher humidity zones. 

Stability Testing: 

Products are placed in stability chambers that simulate these climate conditions. Long-term testing typically occurs at 25°C/60% RH (Relative Humidity) for a minimum of 12 months, while accelerated testing is conducted at 40°C/75% RH for at least six months. Intermediate conditions, like 30°C/65% RH, may also be used if required. 

Analytical Testing: 

Samples are pulled at various time points during the stability study. These samples undergo rigorous testing to detect any changes in the product’s physical appearance, chemical composition, and biological activity. Tests might include assays for potency, degradation products, moisture content, and microbial limits. 

Documentation and Analysis: 

All data collected from stability testing are meticulously documented. This includes recording environmental conditions, test results, and any observed changes in the product. This documentation supports regulatory submissions and helps manufacturers make informed decisions about product shelf life and storage conditions. 

Shelf-Life Determination: 

Based on the data from stability studies, manufacturers determine the product’s shelf life and appropriate storage conditions. This information is critical for ensuring that the product remains safe and effective until its expiration date.
